Missing cat lost in Middletown found 5 months later by highway

In July 2022, a black cat named Minka escaped from her owners’ car by its partly open window at a rest end on I-91 in the vicinity of Middletown. Now, in excess of 5 months afterwards, Minka has been reunited with her homeowners.

Middletown senior animal control officer Gail Petras stated that a spouse and spouse pair had been transferring from Ga to Vermont in July and stopped for a driving split at the Middletown relaxation quit with their three pet dogs and three cats. The couple informed Petras they cracked the home windows just a tad to choose a brief nap in the motor vehicle, and when they woke up, they recognized a single of their cats, Minka, was gone.

Middletown Animal Regulate then took to Fb to article a picture and description of the missing cat on July 5, inquiring for people today to contact animal command if they spotted Minka in the area. Months went by with no calls of Minka sightings, right up until this earlier week.

They been given the contact the week of Dec. 11, appropriate soon after the “first true snow,” about a black cat close to that very same relaxation end on I-91. When they went out to look into the contact, Petras said she noticed Minka.

Petras claimed that it was nearly not possible to get off on the northbound side of the highway, which is where by Minka was, so she obtained off on the southbound aspect and walked half a mile alongside the median until she caught sight of her once again.

“All of the sudden, I see the cat just sitting there by a minimal stream,” Petras said.

Sad to say, Minka ran off for the reason that she was worried, so Petras left some dry cat foodstuff, hoping that the cat would continue to be there. The next working day, she came back with traps, and the cat foodstuff had been eaten. Petras then structured two traps and a way to check them.

3 times went by with almost nothing in the traps. Petras said they in the beginning ended up discouraged by this. With bad weather coming that Friday, she claimed she figured Minka would hunker down someplace, and they enable the weekend go with no seeking for. On Monday morning, Dec. 19, the group established the traps once again, and when they went to look at the traps that same afternoon — Minka was within.

“We have been so satisfied. We took her again to the shelter and scanned her just to ensure with no a doubt it was the ideal cat mainly because we understood she had a microchip,” Petras said. “…She came right out of the entice and was incredibly pleasant suitable away.”

Minka was located filthy, skinny and protected in ticks, but if not she was unhurt, Petras said. She also reported that it was blessed Minka was an indoor/out of doors cat in Georgia, as that allowed her to survive off of catching foods like mice. After she was at the shelter, Petras termed the homeowners and remaining a information. They known as her back, overjoyed.

“They couldn’t feel it,” Petras stated. “They had been just so stunned and so joyful, but so shocked simply because they in no way predicted that we have been likely to find her.”

Her owner, Susan, drove 4 hrs down from Vermont the following working day, Dec. 20, to reunite with Minka.

“[Susan] came and she was so satisfied and she was in tears as shortly as she observed [Minka] and just could not believe it,” Petras explained. “She stated, ‘You know, I have all of her things. I have her bed [and] I have her toys mainly because I could not bear to get rid of nearly anything.”

As a thank you, Petras reported the couple gave a “very generous” donation to the animal shelter for returning Minka to them safely.
